By Megi: Unikatne torbe kao strast i posao

Scroll down for English

Oduvek sam volela ručno rađene i unikatne stvari.

Meet Megi: HR in a world of designing bags

She joined her love for unique bags and awareness of environmental protection into one. Designing canvas tote bags is her passion, which she turned into a small business. Each of her designed bags contains at least one unique handmade detail or a unique message printed on them, such as: ‘Paper? Plastic? Neither!; ‘Pray more, worry less’; ‘Life is a journey’… Inspiration comes from everyday life, she admits. Meet Marigona Milazimi Azimi or, simply, Magi, a successful 27-years old bag designer from Pristina. An interview with Magi was conducted remotely, bearing in mind the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

How and when did you start designing bags?

I’ve always liked crafts and unique things. I got that from my mother because she used to do a lot of crafts and arts. Actually, she is still making them. I’ve started making bags a year ago. This idea came from the love I have for unique bags and also for bags made out of environmentally-friendly materials. I’ve received plenty of support to do this from my husband, who is also one of my best friends.

Is designing bags your hobby or job?

Bags are my passion that I’ve turned into a small business, but I also have a regular job. I work in Human Resources at an financial institution.

Could you describe the bag-making process for us?

The process of making a bag begins with sewing, the second phase is designing and the last one is printing the idea – message (in case of printed bags), but when it comes to the bags that contain handmade details – that process takes a little bit longer because it is more difficult to do than printing.

How long does it take and which materials do you use?

A printed bag can be done in one day, while a couple of days are needed for a bag with handmade details (it depends on the design). I usually use fabric material but sometimes I have different requests for material and color. It depends on the clients’ requests.

What about the inscriptions (quotes) on the bags you design? How do you come up with them?

I came up with a number of inscriptions by myself, but some of them were done at the request of the clients. My inspiration comes from different aspects of life. It is not something in particular. But, as I mentioned before, a lot of bags are personalized and clients can request inscriptions that hold special meaning for them.

Have you crafted anything else but bags?

So far, bags are the only one of my designs I sold. However, I’ve done a lot of crafts like personalized albums and wish cards (with photos, quotes). I’ve made these albums just for my family and friends.

It is inevitable to mention the coronavirus pandemic… Are you designing more than usual or is it the other way around?

I am not designing bags as much as I usually do because people are focused on buying only essential things and it has to be that way. We do not know how long the situation will last. On the other hand, this has had an adverse impact on my business and many businesses all around the world. Let’s hope that this will end soon and we can go back to normal.

In the end, I would like to thank Alternativna for this interview and an opportunity to talk about my small business.
